What Is a Testimony?
The Power of Sharing Your Story With God
If you’ve ever wondered, what is a Christian testimony, really? It’s more than a personal story. The Bible shows us that testimonies are actually divine appointments where God meets people through your words. They are powerful, living encounters that don’t just mark the past....they create new moments of faith in the present.
The Hebrew Roots of “Testimony”
The Old Testament gives us a deeper picture through Hebrew. Several related words help us see what a testimony really is:
-
עֵד (‘ed) → witness
-
עֵדָה (‘edah) → testimony, congregation
-
יָעַד (ya‘ad) → to appoint, to set, to meet by arrangement
-
מוֹעֵד (mo‘ed) → appointed time/place — used for feast days and also the tent of meeting, where God’s presence came to dwell with His people. (Exodus 33:7, Exodus 29:42–43)
Put together, these words tell us that a testimony is not random. It’s a witness, a gathering point, and an appointed meeting where God shows up.
Testimonies Gather Like Bees to Honey
One of those Hebrew words (‘edah) doesn’t just mean congregation but it can also mean a swarm of bees. That’s exactly what happens when you share your story. Testimonies attract and gather. They draw people toward the sweetness of God’s work, creating community around His faithfulness.
Testimonies Are Seeds That Bear Fruit
Numbers 18 describes how the Levites’ offerings were credited to them as if they had produced the harvest themselves. Paul says the same about the Philippians’ gifts — they were “credited” as spiritual fruit (Philippians 4:17–18).
When you sow your testimony, it’s a seed. God multiplies it, producing fruit in others’ lives — and He credits it back to you. That’s the power of a testimony.
Do You Believe Your Own Testimony?
John tells us that many people saw Jesus’ miracles, but “He did not entrust Himself to them” because He knew what was in their hearts (John 2:24).
That forces us to ask:
-
Do I really believe what happened to me?
-
Has it changed my life, or is it just a story I admire from a distance?
-
Am I walking in relationship with the One who met me?
Because a testimony is not just about what happened — it’s about believing the One who encountered you.
A Personal Word: Don’t Hold It Back
For years, I carried a testimony that radically changed my life, but I was afraid no one would believe it. Honestly, it even felt hard for me to believe at first. Every time I tried to share, something held me back.
I didn’t realize what I was carrying. I didn’t understand that having a testimony meant I had proof that God is real, caring, and loving. I didn’t think about who might need to hear it.
It actually took me years to even speak it out loud, because I had to convince myself first — Did that really happen? Yes, it did. And I don’t want you to wait as long as I did.
Your testimony is not just for you. It’s for someone else’s freedom.
Your Testimony Is Bigger Than You
Think about Moses. The burning bush encounter wasn’t just for his personal encouragement. It was for the salvation of a whole nation.
The same is true of you. Christ didn’t meet you only for your own sake!!! He entrusted you with a testimony so that others could believe and be set free.
Carrying the Weight of Testimony
When you understand this, testimonies take on a whole new weight:
-
They are verbal tents of meeting — portable sanctuaries where heaven and earth touch.
-
They are seeds that God credits back as fruit.
-
They are gathering points that draw others into His presence.
-
They are entrusted gifts meant for more than just you.
So don’t hide it. Don’t minimize it. Believe it — and then share it. Because every time you do, you create a new appointment with God for someone else.
Your story matters. And it’s not just your story — it’s His story through you.
